There are many paths to recovery from substance use, process addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. But it’s safe to say that all roads to recovery lead to one important truth: the vital role self-care plays.
Self-care — the intentional actions supporting physical, mental and emotional well-being — is critical to maintaining mental health and supporting treatment and recovery.
While taking good care of yourself sounds like a no-brainer, recovery self-care requires honest self-awareness of destructive behaviors and a commitment to improving and maintaining overall well-being.
We’re reminded of the value of that dedication this month when International Self-Care Day is observed on July 24, 2026. Take a look at the date: 24th day of the 7th month. It’s an intentional nod to the fact that self-care is a 24/7 commitment and an overt reminder to embrace self-care every minute of every day.
Black Horse Health’s professional team knows the significance of self-care in the ongoing recovery from substance and co-occurring mental health recovery. Each day represents a renewed commitment to sobriety and recovery as well as a pledge to living your best life.
How? By recognizing that recovery is shaped by different types of self-care:
Social support is vital to recovery. Some of the ways you can build and enhance social support includes joining a support group; participating in group activities; attending recovery meetings; and surrounding yourself with people who practice self-care.
Physical well-being (which can be severely compromised by substance use) is essential for recovery. Steps to take include paying attention to your diet and nutrition; exercising and being physically active; staying hydrated and sleeping well; and engaging in activities such as sports, gardening, dancing or daily outdoor walks.
Being mindful and present with your thoughts and feelings can go a long way toward healing. Ways you can bolster mental self-care include keeping a journal; deep breathing; learning new skills or taking up new hobbies; and mindfully setting positive, healthy habits.
Managing your feelings and emotions is part of the recovery process. Some strategies toward building emotional wellness include finding acceptance in you and others; finding positives in negative situations; embracing joy and humor; spending time in practices that make you feel happy.
Nurturing your soul connects you to a life of inner peace and purpose. You can find that connection with belonging to something greater by: Engaging with a spiritual community; practicing rituals that bring you comfort and meaning; connecting with nature; and helping others by volunteering or performing acts of kindness.
Don’t think of these aspects of self-care as burdens but as crucial steps toward the mind/body/spirit wellness inherent in recovery. Conquering addictions is a life-long process that can be positively enhanced by taking care of yourself along the way.
Recovery, mental health stability, and chronic pain relief all start with clarity.
