Why Patients Choose Black Horse Health

At Black Horse Health, we provide personalized, evidence-based care to patients in the Houston area to heal from substance use disorder (SUD) while addressing the underlying mental health, trauma, and chronic pain concerns that often contribute to addiction.

Our multidisciplinary team treats SUD alongside co-occurring mental health conditions and chronic pain concerns. We create a more complete path toward healing and long-term recovery so you can safely heal from a dual diagnosis.

Withdrawal symptoms can be dangerous. Patients begin treatment in a medically managed detox program with around-the-clock nursing care, physician oversight, and individualized withdrawal management designed to promote safety, comfort, and stabilization.

With just 16 beds and a high staff-to-patient ratio, we provide personalized attention, customized treatment planning, and the clinical support needed to address each patient’s unique recovery journey.

Our team utilizes proven therapeutic approaches such as CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR, family therapy, and group therapy. We help patients address the underlying factors contributing to substance use and mental health challenges.

In addition to traditional clinical care, patient treatment plans include holistic services. Holistic modalities offered at our treatment facility include movement therapy, art and expressive therapies, yoga, nutrition support, and wellness-focused programming to aid in addiction recovery.

Recovery does not end after discharge. Through alumni programming, family support services, aftercare planning, group therapy opportunities, and ongoing clinical connections, we help patients build a strong foundation for sustained sobriety.

Understanding Chronic Pain and Addiction

Chronic pain, defined as pain lasting three months or longer, can disrupt daily life, such as keeping up with work and family responsibilities. Ongoing pain can also cause many other issues like depression, anxiety, or sleep problems. When left untreated, the pain can worsen.

Individuals with chronic pain are very often prescribed opioid pain medication to manage their symptoms, especially when the use of NSAIDs is not enough. However, continued pain can lead to the misuse of prescription medications in an attempt to self-medicate for relief. Many people with chronic pain eventually develop opioid use disorder (OUD).

Black Horse Health offers compassionate care focused on addiction and pain management techniques, as they often co-exist. Our team strives to empower patients to lead a comfortable and fulfilling life.

How Black Horse Health Can Help Treat Chronic Pain & Addiction

Our team offers personalized, effective solutions to everyone who comes to our Houston, Texas facility struggling with addiction linked to chronic pain. With over 100 years of combined experience, our highly trained, compassionate specialists use a wide range of evidence-based pain treatment options. We strive to uncover the root cause of your pain and develop a personalized plan for sustainable healing.

Our Treatment Programs

Chronic pain affects more than just the body — it impacts every part of your life. We take an integrated approach to care, combining addiction support, physical rehabilitation, mental health support, and long-term wellness planning. Each program is tailored to your condition, history, and goals.

Your journey begins with a comprehensive medical, physical, and psychological evaluation. We look beyond your symptoms to understand the root causes of your chronic pain — whether physical injury, neurological condition, or trauma — so we can design a treatment plan that’s truly effective and sustainable.

Medically Supervised Detox & Stabilization

If you are managing chronic pain with prescription pain medications such as hydrocodone or oxycodone, or other substances, a medically supervised detox may be necessary. Our clinical team can provide help for addiction by guiding you through a safe, supportive withdrawal process using medications such as methadone or buprenorphine. We can help you safely stabilize before beginning physical rehabilitation or therapeutic care.

Inpatient Residential

When pain is severe or mobility is limited, inpatient care provides full-time support in a peaceful, private setting. With 24/7 staff and structured programming, the residential level of care helps reset your mind and body in a restorative environment.

At our residential facility, you’ll receive help for addiction and chronic pain through:

  • Daily physical therapies such as aqua therapy, mobility training, stretching, and yoga
  • Access to holistic treatments like cold plunges, acupuncture, and meditation
  • Treatment for co-occurring conditions like depression or anxiety
  • Individualized therapies including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma-informed care

We aim to treat chronic pain with an abstinence-based approach. However, in severe cases, we can assist patients with chronic pain using medication-assisted therapy. We do not use opiate prescriptions, instead providing Suboxone.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Once you complete our inpatient program, you will not be left to navigate your recovery alone. Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) serves as a step-down level of care from residential treatment. Currently, our PHP is limited to residential program graduates due to space limitations.

We also offer structured day programming for patients who need frequent support but do not require overnight care. Day programming is ideal if you are transitioning from inpatient care or needing ongoing help managing arthritis or fibromyalgia pain and related mental health challenges. Our program includes physical therapy, therapeutic groups, and pain coping skills training.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is another flexible treatment option that also serves as a step-down level of care. IOP allows you to continue working toward addiction recovery while staying active in your daily life. Our IOP is currently limited to residential program graduates due to space restrictions.

In IOP, you will attend several sessions per week focused on addiction and pain education, behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and mobility support. These are designed to help you function more freely while building resilience and long-term relief strategies.

Evidence-Based Therapies Offered at Black Horse Health

Because chronic pain and substance abuse manifest uniquely in each person, we tailor our diverse therapeutic approaches to provide help for addiction. Our recovery team can address your specific needs and help you achieve lasting relief.

Our team can help identify and change negative thought patterns that contribute to mental distress with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is also effective for developing emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal relationship skills.

Our expert-led team offers both acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. These services help process traumatic memories, reduce emotional distress, and foster resilience for a greater quality of life.

We believe sustainable recovery happens when families are actively involved in the healing process, creating a foundation of understanding, compassion, and healthy communication. Immediate family members often reach out to our treatment facility for follow-up counseling and overall family support to aid in relapse prevention.

Our 12-Step and SMART recovery offerings are available to help patients find support from peers while in drug, alcohol, or process addiction recovery. However, attending support group meetings is not mandatory.

At Black Horse Health, a psychiatrist evaluates every patient. If trauma is found to be an underlying factor of chronic pain and addiction, we recommend trauma-based psychotherapy for proper management.

Holistic Options for Chronic Pain & Addiction Treatment

Our unique approach to care integrates evidence-based treatments with holistic treatments, providing you with a well-rounded path to healing.

Aqua Therapy, Cold Plunge, & Infrared Sauna Therapy

Water-based and sauna therapies can help with addiction, joint, and muscular pain. This can be especially so if temperatures are adjusted for specific treatment needs. Our upscale facility is equipped with amenities that will make these rehab practices as comfortable and effective as possible.

Chiropractic & Massage
Therapy

Deep tissue massage or chiropractic treatments can help you best manage muscular or joint-related pain. All sessions can be customized to your specific injuries to ensure comfortable treatment and the best results.

Stretching & Yoga Practices

Engaging in regular stretching exercises and yoga routines can improve flexibility, enhance joint mobility, and alleviate muscle tension. These activities can also help with addiction recovery by promoting relaxation and mindfulness. This form of engagement can contribute to a reduction in stress and tension linked with substance abuse.

Nutrition and Fitness Assessments

Processed sugary foods can contribute to chronic pain and inflammation. Fortunately, a focus on nutrition and wellness is one of the holistic treatments that set us apart from other addiction treatment facilities.

Holistic therapy can help patients process difficult emotions and provide a distraction from the effects of chronic pain. This works by shifting focus from cravings and physical discomfort, allowing you to freely express yourself while releasing endorphins for improved mood.

FAQs

What are the signs of addiction in someone with chronic pain?

If you continue to abuse prescription painkillers despite knowing the risks, mix alcohol with pills, or experience behavioral changes, this may signal a problem with addiction.

Yes. Physical dependence, chronic constipation, and indirect effects of opioids such as poor sleep and impaired mood can contribute to worsened pain.

Acute pain is short-term, whereas chronic pain occurs over an extended period of time.

Chronic pain can arise from different sources and is commonly categorized as neuropathic (nerve damage), somatic (musculoskeletal or surface tissue), and visceral (organ-related) pain. Neuropathic pain often follows nerve injury or disease; somatic pain feels localized to skin, muscles, bones, or tendons; visceral pain is poorly localized and can refer to other areas.

Treatments vary by type and may include the use of non-opioid medications, physical therapy, interventional procedures, and behavioral therapies. At Black Horse Health, we perform comprehensive assessments to identify pain type and develop individualized treatment plans.

Chronic pain sensations vary by pain type, cause, and individual factors and can include aching, throbbing, burning, stiffness, squeezing, or stinging. Symptoms range from mild to severe and may change over time. At Black Horse Health, our medical team assesses your pain severity and offers targeted treatments to address symptoms and recovery goals.

Chronic pain can affect anyone but is more common in certain groups. Pain increases with age because of wear and tear and age-related conditions. Persistent pain is also more likely after major life stressors or loss, in veterans due to service-related injuries and PTSD, and in athletes because of training and injury. Recognizing these risk factors helps guide assessment and treatment.

Demographics that are primarily impacted by chronic pain include:

  • Adults aged 65+
  • Divorced or widowed individuals
  • Veterans
  • Athletes
