Bridging the Gap in Trauma Recovery: Healing with the Herd at Black Horse Health

At Black Horse Health, healing goes far beyond the traditional four walls of an office. Since the day our doors opened, equine-assisted psychotherapy has served as a cornerstone of our integrative, evidence-based care. By stepping out of the clinical setting and onto the peaceful grounds of our contracted partner, Brookside Ranch, our clients experience a profound, experiential form of therapy that bridges the gap between psychological concept and true neurobiological healing.

Every month, BHH clients gather for transformative two-hour sessions led by our dedicated multi-disciplinary clinical team. These sessions are co-facilitated by Clinical Director Lynda Feldt, LPC-S, LCDC, and Shelli LeBret, Trauma-Informed Equine Specialist and Parent Coach. By harmonizing two world-class equine therapy frameworks, Natural Lifemanship (NL) and the EAGALA model, this expert team provides a trauma-informed environment where deep relational recovery can take place.

Bridging the Gap in Trauma Recovery: Healing with the Herd at Black Horse Health

Meet the Healing Herd: Claire, Ginger, and Sawyer

Central to this transformative work is the incredible herd at Brookside Ranch. Our clients partner with a diverse group of therapy animals, including horses, ponies, mini-horses, and donkeys, each bringing their own distinct personality and background to the arena.

Whether it is practicing assertiveness and boundary-setting with Claire, learning to lower internal energy to build an authentic partnership with Ginger, or navigating social obstacles with Sawyer, these remarkable animals serve as honest, compassionate guides. Because horses are prey animals, their survival depends on reading authentic safety. They do not judge a client’s past; instead, they respond strictly to the emotional energy and physical regulation the client brings to the present moment.

Two Modalities, One Integrated Path to Healing

To truly understand how equine therapy aids in treating complex trauma and substance use disorders, it helps to look through the complementary lenses of the models practiced by our clinical team:

The Power of Regulation (Natural Lifemanship): Trauma often leaves the nervous system trapped in a chronic state of fight, flight, or freeze. Through the NL lens, horses serve as perfect somatic partners. In our sessions, clients practice “bottom-up” regulation. When a client learns to ground their own body, lower their heart rate, and release muscle tension, a horse like Claire or Ginger instantly reads that shift and responds by stepping closer, lowering its head, or licking its lips. This physical connection provides immediate, non-judgmental proof that the client is safe and connected.

The Power of Metaphor (EAGALA Model): The EAGALA framework focuses on ground-based, solution-oriented activities where the herd becomes a living mirror for the client’s internal world. If a client is struggling with rigid automatic negative thoughts or defensive walls, an equine specialist might invite them to guide a horse like Sawyer over a physical obstacle. The horse’s unscripted reactions quickly become powerful metaphors for the client’s real-life barriers, family dynamics, or relationship patterns, allowing them to discover their own organic solutions.

Bypassing the “Talk Therapy” Wall

Who is best suited for this type of care? At Black Horse Health, we find that equine therapy is especially groundbreaking for individuals who have built high intellectual defenses or those who struggle with deep attachment wounds, neurodiversity, or emotional dysregulation.

Our clients frequently share that the horses help them feel things that talk therapy couldn’t quite reach. In the dirt of the arena, abstract concepts like “building a recovery network” or “maintaining healthy boundaries” become tangible. Clients learn exactly how much energy, assertion, and calm presence are required to maintain a connection without shutting down or becoming aggressive.

Witnessing Lasting Transformation

We evaluate the success of our equine program by watching for real, observable shifts in relational confidence, emotional expression, and nervous system regulation. True efficacy is measured when a client transitions out of a state of survival and into a state of authentic, embodied connection.

Consider a recent moment in the arena involving a client who entered the session feeling deeply depleted, carrying a heavy baseline of anxiety, and struggling with an internal critic telling them they “couldn’t do it right”. When first approaching the herd, the client’s physical tension and protective, closed-off posture caused the horses to keep their distance. Working closely with Lynda Feldt and Shelli LeBret, the client was guided to pause, practice somatic grounding, and actively shift away from those negative thought patterns.

As the client intentionally took a deep breath and lowered their internal energy, a profound physical and emotional connection unfolded. Claire, sensing the shift to authentic calm, stepped forward, lowered her head, and initiated a heart-to-heart connection. Walking together to a quieter part of the arena away from distractions, the client discovered that by persevering and adjusting their own internal state, they could successfully invite a thousand-pound animal to walk in step with them as a partner. This real-time behavioral interaction provides undeniable validation of safety, helping clients carry that same regulated confidence back into their everyday relationships and recovery.
